David Nail - I'm A Fire - Album Review

David Nail never quite managed to find the style people would recognized him for, and his previous albums had mitigated success. I think I'm A Fire is a game change for him, as there are numerous songs that could easily hit the radio, and many others that are musical gems. I genuinely think that this is breakthrough album.

Most of you probably either don't know who David Nail is (or perhaps simply don't remember any particular song he made), or know him for Let It Rain. He made sure to change this with a brilliant album. It's filled with fantastic songs, and it could easily be nominated for album of the year if it was just for me. It's catchy at times, emotional at others, never falling in the easy passes of bro-country, which is literally melody to my ears.

First, I need to talk about the song-writing. Numerous songs were written by Scooter Carusoe, which does an excellent job on this album and to be honest, lifts by himself the quality of it all. Other writers include Brandy Clark, Jimmy Robbins and David Cook. Nail is mentioned as a co-author for many songs, but didn't write any himself, which to be honest, in the context of the quality of the song-writing of this album, doesn't matter. As long as the job is done, and done great, I couldn't care less about who writes it.

Second, the album is quite diverse. You get catchy and upbeat songs, you get slow and emotional ones. That being said, David Nail stays very conservative on this album as for the style of his music, he doesn't explore in other subgenres, like many other artists, who, for example, would include bluegrass country at times, or rock. David Nail seems to know who his fans are, and wants to serve them well. In that regard, mission accomplished.

TLDR: This is a fantastic album. I haven't listened to many albums in the past couple of months where the quality of the songs was so constant. It's really a well-crafted album, and I genuinely hope that people get to listen to it, because it very well might be a breakthrough album for him.

9.5/10

Check out the details for every song below:

Whatever She's Got
This song was the first single, and will remain the most popular song of this album for sure. It simply sounds amazing, and the singing is excellent. The guitar strumming is perfect and fits the song exceptionally well.

9/10

Broke My Heart
While the song isn't light-hearted, David Nail managed to make it catchy, and the lyrics are pretty good too. It's a very good song overall, and even though the "heart break story" doesn't ring a bell for me, it's one of my favourite songs of the album. The chances this hit the radio are pretty high.

8.5/10

Burnin' Bed
This is my personal favourite song of the album. The guitar and singing are both excellent, and the lyrics are absolutely great, which comes at no surprise as they're written by Brandy Clark, who is an exceptional song-writer. I absolutely love the passionate aspect of the story, which resonates even more as David Nail's performance is really amazing.

9.5/10

When They're Gone (Lyle County) (feat. Little Big Town)
The collaboration with Little Big Town is interesting here, as both are aiming more or less at the same fanbase, the same audience. This song is really good too, and plenty catchy. The song-writing is also excellent, and it's interesting to know that it was written by Brett Eldredge. That being said, David Nail's performance isn't as great as on the other songs in my opinion.

8/10

Brand New Day
This is a really good slow song. The lyrics are really amazing to be honest, it's worth the listen by itself. For once, the guitar solo at two thirds of the song doesn't feel out of place. This is one of the best slow songs I've heard in a while.

8.5/10

Kiss You Tonight

This is the second single of the album, the one that's currently playing on the radio. It's a very good song, and I genuinely hope that people will get to appreciate it, because it's not everyday that such an emotional song gets to land on the radio. Great performance by David Nail, and the lyrics are great as well.

9.5/10

The Secret
Again, this is an exceptional song from the lyrics perspective. The song is very enjoyable, and feels emotional, and the sadness of the story will really get to you if you listen it fully.

9/10

Countin' Cars
This song is really not the best of the album. It's meant to be catchy, but the instruments are clustered in a puzzling way, and the rhythm changes don't fit well together.

7/10

Easy Love
This is a very upbeat and enjoyable song. It's simply entertaining and has a good rhythm.

8/10

I'm A Fire
Even though this is the "title song", I'm not a fan of it. It's not involving, it's not catchy. It's a decent song, but that's it. The lyrics are decent.

7/10

Galveston (feat. Lee Ann Womack)
This is a great ending song, it's enjoyable and relaxing, and ends the album on a good note. It's upbeat, but not catchy.

7.5/10
