As a whole, Fuse is a great album. It really has a wide variety of songs, from really pop-rock songs, to slower songs. There are really high quality songs of here, I'll take Come Back To Me as an example, because I really think it's great. I'd love to see Keith Urban invest a bit more time in choosing better lyrics for his songs, we have quite a few songs that are totally empty or repetitive here.
The music quality is really top-tier in this album, we have high quality producing, there is no cuts in the corners on this matter. What hurts is the lack of depth to the story in many songs, and I find this quite unacceptable. The ruined opportunity to do something great with Eric Church on Raise 'em Up is an example of that.
The whole album in the Deluxe Edition has 16 songs (all those here), and to be honest, if the album was trimmed to 12+2 bonus tracks to 14, that'd be great. Not that I don't like longer albums, I really do, but if this means compromising on the depth of each, and making songs that end up looking a lot alike, I think he'd be better off shorting the whole thing. Gotta Be Good and Lucky Charm are a demonstration of this.
On the other hand, like said previously, I have to hand it to Keith Urban, wonderful job with the diversity of this album. Everyone will find something he likes on here. Moreover, I feel like we'll hear more of this on the radio soon enough. I really want people to discover Come Back To Me, it's that good.
7.5/10
Somewhere In My Car
Keith Urban starts strong with the guitar in this song. It's a really enjoyable song. That being said, there isn't much story in there. It can become repetitive too.
8.5/10
Even The Stars Fall 4 U
This is really too pop-rock for me. Again, we get song-writing that is quite immature in this one, we have absolutely no story here.
4.5/10
Cop Car
Song-writing is already an improvement over what we saw before, but still, we are pretty damn far from top-tier stories like I've reviewed in other albums. The guitar solo is pretty out of nowhere though, that could have been left behind quite easily.
7.5/10
Shame
That is one song I wouldn't have been surprised to hear on a Simple Plan album 10 years ago. To be fair, the song-writing is bad, and Keith Urban doesn't even try not to fall in the pop-rock genre in this one.
4/10
Good Thing
And another pop-rock song by Keith Urban. Basically the lyrics in this song are just the chorus over and over again.
3.5/10
We Were Us (feat. Miranda Lambert)
The guitar while Miranda is singing is great, and the song as a whole is great. It's a pretty popular theme in country, this "good old days when we were in love", but at least we don't fall in the clichés, so it's still good. The duo is really great too. A real ear-worm.
9/10
Love's Poster Child
It's an enjoyable song, but we are pretty close from the pop-rock genre, as we have been quite a few times in this album so far. It's also pretty repetitive, the chorus fills most of the song.
5.5/10
She's My 11
Typical feel good song. Not the good type though, this one is repetitive to say the least, and pretty empty lyrics-wise.
4.5/10
Come Back To Me
This is perhaps the most surprisingly good song of the album. It's a sad song, but the lyrics and poesy is great. This whole concept of the guy letting go his love to let her live her life, the depth of it all, is really impressive. Also the music with the guitar in the back is really good.
8.5/10
Red Camaro
Right after Come Back To Me, it's nice that we get a feel good song. The lyrics are pretty empty though, the whole thing doesn't make any sense. It's not an ear-worm either, even though if it feels like it's trying to be.
6/10
Little Bit Of Everything
We got this pretty early this summer, and for some reason it didn't last long. I don't know why, I find it pretty good. That being said, there are a pretty good quantity of traditional southern clichés in there, but in my mind, it's not pushed over the board like some artist do it.
8/10
Raise 'em Up (feat Eric Church)
This song could have really been something interesting if the lyrics had a tad more depth to them, to me it's what's ruining the whole thing, it becomes repetitive quite fast. That being said, it's still quite enjoyable. But next time you call up Eric Church on a song, make sure that the lyrics have a bit more behind them.
6/10
Heart Like Mine
This song is really good. The lyrics are pretty great, with this story of the man who fails to be sensitive enough and lose his girl, and wishes to be a better man, but was raised to be tough.
8.5/10
Black Leather Jacket
This song is also about the old theme of "young and in love", but does it pretty well, with the background vocals adding to it, just well arranged as a whole. It fits well together.
7.5/10
Gonna B Good
This feels like a filler song. The lyrics are empty, the music is generic. There is nothing to see here.
5/10
Lucky Charm
Another filler song in my mind. The pop-rock lyrically-empty kind of thing we've seen a few times before in this album.
4.5/10
