My House - Kacey Musgraves

So this album is the first she is doing. She has been in Nashville for a while, writing songs for other since a pretty long period. This is an album of extremely high quality, each song was written with dedication. The musical arrangement is in most song well  made, but quite a few songs were a bit too depressing for me. I have no problems with having a couple of songs on an album talking about difficult things in life, but I would have loved to have some songs more upbeat, or said in other words, with more positive stories to them.

Each song has a story to it, and Kacey Musgraves is in my mind really trying to target the younger audience with some songs. On the other hand, some songs will really relate to a much more mature audience. I'll give a lot of credit to Musgraves for such a high quality album as her first. She sets the bar very high for herself for the next one. That being said, I'd love to have a next album with songs that are a bit more positive.

8.5/10

Silver Lining
Probably one of the best songs on the album. Profound lyrics, and the guitar arrangement fits the song really well. The song becomes repetitive at one point, but it's still very enjoyable.

9/10

My House
Again the lyrics with Kacey Musgraves are never something to complain about. It's noticeable that she puts effort in writing each and every song. The music felt a bit too repetitive for me. The harmonica isn't really adding much to the song.

7.5/10

Merry Go 'Round
No surprise the song was nominated at the latest CMA Awards. The piano makes really adds a lot to this song, and the banjo fits perfectly. The play of words with Mary, Merry and Marry the entire song really ads to it. It explains perfectly the typical southern family and the internal problems of it. It also has the ear-worm factor to it.

9.5/10

Dandelion
I'm not a fan of the song personally, too depressing. The lyrics are obviously well thought, but the steel guitar is too much at a lot of points. The song quickly becomes repetitive.

7/10

Blowin' Smoke
It's surprising to have a rock-inspired song on here, but it fits nicely. Musgraves doesn't fall in the scheme that a rock song needs to have a nice beat to it to play on the radio, again the lyrics are well thought, the story of the waitress that says she'll quit but never does as she's only "blowing smoke" is interesting and totally relevant to a lot of people obviously.

9/10

I Miss You
This story of this girl who has everything she wants but the love of her life is pretty nice. The music arrangement fits the song in a nice way. Again, I'm not such a fan of depressing songs as a whole, but I guess a lot of people could enjoy hearing this song that is relevant to them.

7.5/10

Step Off
To me this song is directly addressed to a younger audience by the lyrics themselves talking about a parent a child doesn't like, so to me, it's not really relevant. In any case, I find the lyrics well written, and the music quite well made to it. Again, it's the kind of song a specific audience might really like and relate to.

7/10

Back On the Map
The story talking about someone who  doesn't know where his/her life is heading is really interesting, but again, too depressing for me. The chorus sounds well, the drum and guitar fits the song well also.

7.5/10

Keep It to Yourself
Again, a story addressed to a specific audience, being people just out of a relationship and that are heartbroken. Also a quite depressing song.

7/10

Stupid
And... another story about someone who got out of a relationship and doesn't want to be in love again. Even if the song has a somewhat more upbeat rhythm to it, it becomes really repetitive, at least to me.

6.5/10

Follow Your Arrow
One of the best songs of the album. It's all linked to the "carpe diem" movement also known in popular culture as "YOLO". The song is definately an ear-worm, and the guitar is wonderful in this song. Obviously the use of the word "joint" did a lot not to get it on the radio for a longer period of time.

9/10

It Is What It Is
A very well written song, also a bit on the depressing side. I guess it relates again to a specific audience, the people who are in some sort of relationship not knowing if they are a couple or not.

7/10
