We'll say it straight: at 10 songs and near 40 minutes, it's a short album. One or two extra songs would have been nice. In any case, the album is very enjoyable, Billy really does a great job finding songs with great lyrics. Some other artists should take example of him: if you can't make decent song-writing, outsource the damn thing. There are really a couple of songs on there that I'm surprised didn't hit the radio, and the album as a whole felt consistent.
That being said, I really disappointed by the rap in Banana Pancakes. I don't expect that on an album by Billy Currington, and I don't want it. The song was so great... and then the rap kills it totally. In any case, I felt that effort was put in almost every song to make it great (to be fair with only 10 songs we hope so!). Billy is one of those artists that don't get enough attention in Nashville (at least according to me) and that would benefit from getting on the radio more often.
Great album.
8.5/10
Hey Girl
First song of the album, directly goes on the radio, obviously Billy Currington learned the way to make a good song that will become an ear-worm, which this exactly is. It's really not like the song was that well-written, it's pretty basic to be honest. Still, it's catchy. - 8/10
Wingman
We are still directly in Billy's style. A funny song about a guy, the wingman, going to see the girl his friend wanted to talk to. The song makes sense as a whole. I particularly love the musical arrangement on this song, with the saxophone and else. Enjoyable song, exactly they type I'd expect from Billy at this point. It will probably won't hit the radio, but I preferred it to Hey Girl anyways.- 8.5/10
One Way Ticket
It's a feel good song as a whole, it's relaxing, nothing anything particularly stunning about the song though. I also found it to become quickly repetitive. - 7.5/10
23 Degrees And South
Very smooth song, but Billy chooses his songs himself, so we still get something of quality. He's paying for the lyrics, so they might as well be good. Like said previously, it's relaxing, again nothing particularly stunning musically wise or song-writing wise. - 7/10
We Are Tonight
It's the song that's in the title of the album, we expect quite a lot. The song doesn't disappoint. It's upbeat, it's an ear-worm. Surprised that it didn't hit the radio yet, but I guess it's a matter of weeks at this point. With this one, we are glad. The type of song of the "we are young, we are having fun, the world is ahead of us" kind of thing. Whatever, I enjoy it better than the cry-in-your-beer type of song that a lot of other artists love so much to do. - 9/10
Hard To Be A Hippie (feat. Willie Nelson)
The song has quite a lot going for it: impressive guitar, Willie Nelson singing in it, a story of how back in the days as a Hippie everyone was nice to everyone, and that we've lost this touch nowadays. It's a very enjoyable song, well executed. - 8/10
Closer Tonight
This song doesn't say that much lyrics-wise, and the beat is really slow. In my mind, it's the perfect song that you would put on a playlist to listen to while having a romantic dinner. That being said, it's not the song that I'll want to listen to often, and the music arrangement is really average. - 7/10
Another Day Without You
Exactly the same principle as Closer Tonight, but executed in a very wonderful way. The refrain part where he recites the days of the week (even though it might sound childish said like that) just sounds really great and is original. This all makes the difference between only being on that dinner playlist, and also landing on the songs I listen to more often. - 9/10
Banana Pancakes
I'll say it straight: even though it's a remake of the original song by Jack Johnson, everything about this song would have made it my favourite of the album... if there weren't god damn rap at the end. If you are going to buy the album, just go online, find some website that'll edit the song for you, and cut the rap part. Way better. That being done, it's one of my favourites of the album! The song is quite similar to Another Day Without You, in the type of song it is, it's very well made, enjoyable, relaxing but also quite upbeat at some points. That being said, the rap at the end is unforgivable. - 7/10
Hallelujah
I don't know for other readers of this blog (if there are any!), but songs that talk about religion aren't my cup of tea. The rhythm is really nice in this song, the chorus is a real ear-worm, but at the end of the day, the lyrics are a killer for me. - 7/10
